Why Is My Hair Falling Out? How to Combat Thinning Hair & Hair Loss

Picture it. You're in the shower and as you comb your conditioner through your hair, another few strands are removed with it. Or perhaps you're waking up surrounded by strands on your pillow. Whatever the case ,there are many reasons for thinning hair and loss, and there are also many hair loss treatments to solve this concern. Here at AllHair.ie, we're here to help!

Remember, you're not alone. Did you know that more than 80% of men and almost half of women experience significant hair loss during their lifetime? For many people, hair thinning will occur before reaching middle age.

There are many potential reasons why your hair may be falling out. Some common causes of hair loss include:

  • Age: As we get older, our hair naturally begins to thin and fall out.
  • Hormones: Changes in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy or menopause, can cause hair loss.
  • Genetics: Hereditary hair loss, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss.
  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disease and iron deficiency anaemia, can cause hair loss. Vitamin deficiencies can also play a role, including a lack of riboflavin, biotin, folate, and vitamin B12.
  • Medications: Some medications, such as those used to treat cancer and depression, can cause hair loss as a side effect.
  • Physical or emotional stress: Extreme physical or emotional stress can cause hair loss.

If you're concerned about your hair loss, it's best to talk to a healthcare provider or a dermatologist. They can help you determine the cause of your hair loss and recommend treatment options.

There are several things you can do to help prevent hair loss and promote healthy hair growth. These include:

  1. Eating a well-balanced diet high in protein, and get in plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  2. Opt against hair styles such as braids and ponytails, which pull the hair tight and can do damage to the hair's shaft.
  3. Using a scalp-focussed shampoo, conditioner and treatment system, such as the Nioxin - System Kit 1 (Normal to Thin Hair), and the Nioxin Anti-Hair Loss Serum.
  4. Getting regular trims (approx every couple of months) to remove split ends and promote healthy hair growth.
  5. Using essential oils, such as rosemary and peppermint, to stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth.
  6. Increase your Vitamin B12, riboflavin, biotin and folate intake.
