What Does Toner Do To Hair?

You may have heard of toner, especially if you're a blondie! But what exactly is it, and what does it do to our hair?

Toner is used to neutralise brassy or yellow tones in blonde, silver, or white hair. It is typically used after hair has been lightened or highlighted to help restore the hair's natural colour and tone. Toners may also be used to enhance or change the overall colour of the hair, by depositing pigments that are different from the natural hair color. Toners can come in a variety of forms such as shampoos, conditioners, sprays, or creams. They can be applied at home or in a salon.

Hair toners are typically used on blonde, silver or white hair, but they can be used on other shades as well. Toners can be semi-permanent or demi-permanent, which means they will fade gradually over time.

Is It A Hair Dye?

No. A toner is not a hair dye and will only add or remove certain tones or shades to your hair colour. They're also not permanent and will fade over time, but it's good to keep in mind that, it should be applied by a professional to achieve your preferred colour and tone.

How long should toner be left on for?

It depends on the specific product and the results you desire, but generally, toners are left on the hair for anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Keep in mind that the lighter your hair is, the less time needed. Never leave your toner on longer than the instructions specify, as this can cause damage to the hair. You should begin by leaving your toner on for the minimum time instructed and check on its progress every 5 minutes before determining when to remove it.
